Paper Battles

The following sets are available from Wargame Vault as zipped PDF files to download, print and assemble paper miniatures for your (real) tabletop at home.

The English Civil War

This is a set of PDF files for printing and constructing paper stand up figures and scenery for fighting tabletop battles of the English Civil War. It is provided as a collection of counters and scenery - how you choose to use the various parts in your games is left entirely up to you.

This is a large set - the download is divided into 3 separate Zip files totalling over 100 MBs and includes a variety of:

* dragoons
* generals
* foote including various musket & pike types
* horse including light and heavy types
* artillery including light, medium and heavy guns
* casualties
* rural buildings
* hedges & trees
* roads and streams

The figures and terrain are highly stylised and to no particular scale. Individual figure height varies from unit to unit - the only constant is a base size of 60mm by 40mm for the fighting units. The viewing perspective also varies from unit to unit and both sides of the counters carry an identical image. This is mainly for aesthetic reasons - the excess blank paper can be neatly trimmed from each counter, which enhances the look of the game considerably.

The facing of the counter is shown by a pattern of chevrons on the unit front and by a solid block of colour on the units rear with a brief identifying label such as "Muskets" or "Pike".

In general the troops depicted can be used for either side in the conflict and any labels I have assigned to them are for identifying purposes only.

It is intended that this set be used (with some imagination and adaptation) with any set of wargaming rules that is element based.

Scottish Armies

This is an expansion for the PB01 ECW Paper Battles set covering the Scottish forces of Montrose and their Covenanter opponents. It contains files in PDF format to print out and assemble into simple stand-up counters.

As with the earlier set the counters show very stylized images (not to any consistent scale) and the base sizes are approximately 60mm wide by 40mm deep.

This time the counters show rear views of the troops where needed!

The counters include:

  • Dismounted Dragoons
  • Mounted Dragoons
  • Dragoon Horse holders
  • Dragoon Officers (Mounted & Foot)
  • Frame Guns, Falconet & Saker Artillery
  • Generals
  • Highlanders
  • Highland Officers/Command
  • Scottish Horse
  • Scottish Lancers
  • Horse Officers
  • "Poor" Muskets
  • "Poor" Pikes
  • Seasoned Muskets
  • Seasoned Pikes
  • Foot Officers
  • Irish Brigade Muskets
  • Irish Brigade Pikes
  • Irish Brigade Officers
  • Montrose & Covenanter Control Markers

The American Civil War

This is a set of PDF files for printing paper stand up figures and scenery for fighting tabletop battles of the American Civil War.  It is provided as a collection of counters and scenery - how you choose to use the various parts in your games is left entirely up to you. It contains both Union and Confederate armies comprising infantry, cavalry, artillery and scenery.

PDF files include:

  • Infantry bases in march attack, march column and in reserve
  • Cavalry bases in line, column and dismounted firing line/skirmish (including horse holders)
  • Field artillery both deployed and limbered
  • Generals
  • Casualties
  • Walls, fences, trees and rural buildings

The figures and terrain use very stylised graphics intended to be evocative of period photographs. You can download a free sample from my website or from Wargame Vault. The set includes both "Small Scale" 40 x 20mm bases (figure height approx 10-15mm) and "Large Scale" 60 x 30mm bases (figure height approx 20-25mm). each PDF file can be printed on both International A4 and US Letter sized paper.

The pieces in this set follow the same basic construction techniques used with my English Civil War set. I would recommend using your printer's best/better print settings and good white paper (I use 90gsm which adds a feeling of quality to the finished pieces). Also, if you decide to trim the pieces (as shown in the pictures below) the final effect can be enhanced by colouring any white cut edges with a dark brown felt tip or marker.
